Dejando Huellas - Leaving Footprints

My friend Jose is starting a program this year called Dejando Huellas in Toncontin, which is my neighboring community and where he grew up. It will be a high school for teens in Toncontin and the surrounding communities. Although the majority of kids graduate from the elementary school, many teens are not able to go to high school because of the distance of the high schools or financial reasons.

The program not only will provide a Christian education for the students, but they will also learn Bible, English, computers, music, mechanics, cosmetology and carpentry, to improve their living conditions and help them find a job. With this educational opportunity that we provide, it is possible to reduce the percentage of young people that are victims of drugs, alcohol, or laziness currently present in the communities.
There are currently 34 teens that have the opportunity to study in this high school that they would otherwise not be attending, as well as keeping them out of the street and from getting into trouble.

Jose has a huge heart to serve God in this way by serving his community and to provide an alternative life for the teens that will help them not only study, but will also provide them with a future.

The high school program that he started this year was supposed to include free books for the students, but he recently found out that we now need to pay for them.
If anyone is willing to support a student by helping with the cost of the books please send me an email at kaitlenhenry@gmail.com so that I can get you more information.

Feliz Navidad

This Christmas was drastically different than any other Christmas that I have celebrated in my whole life, not only because I was wearing a tank top and sweating, but in the way they celebrate, and being with the kids.

This year I chose to stay in Honduras and celebrate with my friends and second family here. What I didn’t know was that on the 24th and 25th I would be watching one of the houses by myself and taking care of them. These past two weeks the house parents have taken turns taking their Christmas vacation and with a friend I have been taking care of the kids. But she went home for Christmas as well.

So I had 7 kids for Christmas and it was a blast. We celebrated with everyone on the property with a big lunch of tamales, sandwiches (Honduran Christmas food), Pepsi, fruit and dessert.

Then they were given their gifts, which included new clothes and a new toy or two. As well as a BB gun, remote control helicopter and water toys for the river to be shared between the kids.

After playing all day with their new things, they put on their new clothes and we went to the Christmas service. The kids sang a song, did a skit, and a dance.

My favorite part was when Carlitos, who is the most active kid of the house was able to follow along in his Bible during the sermon. He just finished 2nd grade and can finally read. Every time a new passage was mentioned he starting flipping through his bible to find it to read along. It was cool to see him somewhat clam and attentive, reading, yelling AMEN when appropriate and participating with the adults.
